The lego movie: Industry research

L/o: To research the process, companies and regulators behind the film industry

1. Filmmaking involves a number of discrete stages including an initial story, idea, or commission, through screenwriting, casting, shooting, sound recording and pre-production, editing, and screening the finished product before an audience that may result in a film release and exhibition. it was mostly CG with some stop motion & also some real LEGO still sets comped in. But Animal Logic made the CG photoreal. This confirmed most of LEGO Movie was animated via CGI, with the exception of… the awesome credits sequence! ... From start to finish the credits animation production took two months. It may not have been exactly stop-motion, but The Lego Movie still had to be built brick-by-brick through a combo of real Lego sets, large scale, plastic models, and CGI. As this clip shows, it all adds up to a long, laborious process to make one of the most unique and entertaining movies.

2. A conglomerate is a corporation that is made up of a number of different, sometimes unrelated businesses. In a conglomerate, one company owns a controlling stake in a number of smaller companies all of whom conduct business separately and independently.

3.The Big Six,” comprised of motion picture conglomerates 20th Century Fox, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., Universal Pictures, Columbia Pictures, and Walt Disney Studios, account for over 83 percent of the North American market share and bring in billions of dollars in revenue each year.

4.The film industry in the UK is regulated by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The BBFC is responsible for classifying films that have a cinema and DVD release.

Capitalism, copyright laws, and the power of government and the media are just a few of the themes that are present in the 2014 lego movie. However, while those external themes are present, The Lego Movie also boasts ideas connected to us as individuals living within communities.

The LEGO Movie is a 3D animated film which follows lead character, Emmet a completely ordinary LEGO mini-figure who is identified as the most "extraordinary person" and the key to saving the Lego universe. Emmet and his friends go on an epic journey to stop the evil tyrant, Lord Business

Narrative theory

Traditionally, narrative structures followed a formula which was identified by the theorist Tzvetan Todorov. ... He discovered that narratives moved forward in a chronological order with one action following after another. In other words, they have a clear beginning, middle and end.

Todorov mentioned that there are 5 stages that a character will go through; those are Equilibrium, Disruption, Recognition Repair the Damage and Equilibrium Again.

Equilibrium: Despite Emmet’s enthusiasm, none of the people he interacts with seem to know who he is. His only friend is a plant. Also everything is awesome

The Disturbance: Emmett loses his instructions, is smitten at the unexpected appearance of the stunning Wyldstyle and falls down a hole chasing after her. There he finds and touches the piece of resistance.

recognition of disruption : Emmet is unwittingly a participant in Lord Business’ oppressive scheme to enslave the universe. This is finally brought to his attention when he is sentenced by Bad Cop to be melted to death despite his innocence.

The Central Conflict: Emmet and the Master Builders battle Lord Business’ and his plan to Kragle the whole universe on Taco Tuesday.

In an uncharacteristic act of humility, Batman tells Wyldstyle Emmet is the hero she deserves. Emmet and Wyldstyle finally hold hands. President Business distributes the antidote for the Kragle, and the people are set free. The human and his child play with Legos together. But now that Finn’s sister is also allowed to play, a new threat arises… for the sequel.

The film is IT

the hero in IT is Bill and the others

The villain is penny wise

The donor would be gerioge as that enables them to go and kill penny wise

The helper would be beverly

The princess is beverly

The princess father is beverly father

the dispatcher is bill

the false hero is Henry

In The Lego Movie the hero is Emmet Brickowski, a possible homage to the Wachowski brothers who made The Matrix. Emmet is a cog in the machine of the well snapped together universe in which he is a very average construction worker who moonlights as a double decker couch builder. He does his job, he goes home, he has no family and no friends.

Both Neo and Emett are thought to be special (Neo is The One, Emmett is The Special) and are told they are in a prophecy and are to be the saviors against a false world constructed by an powerful overlord. Both are in love with the woman who first introduced them to the realities of the world they live in.

Trinity vs Wyldstyle – Both are brooding, badass, masters of the false world and the real world. But they aren’t quite the one the prophecy spoke about.

Vitruvius vs Morpheus – Both are the holder of the prophecy who will help the hero destroy the oppressive overlord.

Lord Business vs The Architect – Both are the designers of their worlds and fight to keep the order that they’ve created in the face of an uprising.

Mr Smith vs Bad Cop – These guys both enforce the rules of the subjugated. They make sure the oppressive system stays intact and hunt down the chosen one.

Micromanagers vs Sentinels – Big flying machines with tentacles that destroy and do the will of the enforcer and the overlord.

Zion vs the Cloud World – Both are places where anything goes and the spirit of the individual isn’t stifled by the world that they escaped from. Both are invaded by the bad guy’s hencheman (Mr Smith/Bad Cop) with the help of multi-armed machines (Sentinels/Micromanagers)

Other similarities, the teams must both break into an office building where a security system must be disabled, but isn’t until the last second. The heroes in both have awesome ships that carry them through the world outside the Matrix/Lego land.

Target audience

l/o: To identify the target audience using demographics & psychographics

The movie targets a family audience.

also the primary target audience for this advertising campaign are  children. Lego is a kids toy and this advertising campaign would be very appealing to them as they would recognise the product and it is also an animation making it more appealing to kids.

This can be split up into three groups;

young kids who play with lego, it apples to young kids as they play with lego and also would find the film funny and its a easy story line to follow
parents who played with lego when they were young, some parents would like to see it as when they were children they would have played with lego as children so the nostalgia feeling would make them feel happy and remind them when times were simpler and easier for them.
young adult cinema-goers

Advantages vertical interrogation

Reduce transportation costs if common ownership results in closer geographic proximity.

Improve supply chain coordination.

Provide more opportunities to differentiate by means of increased control over inputs.

Capture upstream or downstream profit margins.

Advantages of horizontal integration

are economies of scale, increased differentiation (more features that distinguish it from its competitors), increased market power, and the ability to capture new markets.

Tv advertising

tv adverts are shorter,

show the characters, show most exciting bits and important bits,

would show after school hours,

The lego movie broke boundaries with its tv marketing with linking popular [at the time] British ads such as British heart foundation, confused.com,BT and premier inn. All ads were made fully out of lego and between each add 1 of the 4 important characters dropping down with the lego add. It attracted all audience as lego is very popular with adults and kids. It broke boundaries as it was the first full lego add break ever. They just made the ads out of lego and made it a special add break. The remade adds helped advertise the movie as the brands were family oriented  and were popular brands at the time. It created intrest in the social media as it was the fist full lego movie add break. The advrets wanted to be involed as they knew the lego movie would do well which would make thier companys more money and in the end it was the first full lego add break which would make tv history. The tv add was succfuessfull as all social media was banging on about it and all the newspaper had write ups about it.

The lego movie; Trailer

Warner bros made there logos out of lego as it links to the whole world of Emmett thinking about lego and every one its part of lego. Warner bros showed there logos before the trailer as every one knows warner bros its a good company and the film would be good.

Equilibrium- the normality.- emmet watching the news in the house

disruption- an event occurs- lord business saids go to sleep

recognition of disruption- characters realise somethings up- lord business hunts emmet down

attempt to solve disruption-  steal the kraggle

The equilibrium needs to be shown quickly because children have a low attention span so it gets shown quickly so they are still interested.

Diegetic sound. Sound whose source is visible on the screen or whose source is implied to be present by the action of the film: voices of characters. sounds made by objects in the story. music represented as coming from instruments in the story space ( = source music)

Non-diegetic sound is any sound in a film that doesn't originate from the world of the film. These are typically sounds that are added for effect in post-production. For example, a film soundtrack is almost always non-diegetic sound because the characters don't hear it.

In films, an intertitle, also known as a title card, is a piece of filmed, printed text edited into the midst of (i.e. inter-) the photographed action at various points.

A palette is a range of colors. It is also the board that artists use to hold and mix paint. Picture Picasso in his blue period: He is holding a palette on which you see a limited palette of blue tones.

Uses & gratifications

.

Audiences who have seen the Lego Movie would enjoy identifying with the well-known established characters in a first-person video game. This identification is a key gratification, as outlined by Blumler and Katz's theory, for audiences who may identify with values, such as the comedic tone from the film, the excitement in games that take the audience into forbidden worlds, or the simple value of good defeating evil in The Lego Movie Game.

Gamers may enjoy games which offer suspense, mystery or problem-solving, action or spectacle that the game provides. They may also enjoy the self-enclosed fictional world offering escape from everyday life in which they develop a sense of expertise positioning them as powerful and successful, with rewards as they rise through the levels in the game.

Finally, players may play with a world-wide player community and an immersive and difficult game offers social interaction or the exact opposite where games isolate themselves in a self-enclosed world of established characters as in the Lego Movie Game.

Question 6

Which company produced and distuburted the Lego movie?
Warner bros

Question 7

Explain two benefits of  vertical integration?
  1. It allows you to invest in assets that are highly specialized.
  2. It gives you more control over your business.
  3. It allows for positive differentiation.
  4. It requires lower costs of transaction
For question 7 I need to revise and retain that piece of information.

Question 8

Explain the Lego movie campaign targeted all audeinces?

Who is the primary target audience for this advertising campaign?
The primary target audience for this advertising campaign are the children. Lego is a kids toy and this advertising campaign would be very appealing to them as they would recognise the product and it is also an animation making it more appealing to kids. The Lego movie was launched as a kids action movie, so aimed at the younger audiences.

And the secondary target audience for this advertising campaign is for the adults who have and interest in the Lego products as it might have been one of their childhood toys or to see the appropriate humour and the famous actors playing Lego characters and how they would interpret each character. Also the makers of the Lego movie wanted parents to bring their children not only so they could enjoy it but for the older generations you enjoy it too.

For question 8 need to revise

Lego movie analysis

The Lego Movie Videogame is a Lego-themed action-adventure video game developed by TT Fusion. It follows the plot of the animated film The Lego Movie. The game was published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and released alongside the film in 2014.

Gameplay
Continuing the trend of gameplay from previous Lego titles by TT Games, the game puts players in control of various characters from the movie, utilizing Lego pieces to make their way through several levels. For the first time in the series, environments are completely made out of Lego pieces.

The game introduces two main new character types: Regular Builders (such as Emmet in earlier levels) and Master Builders (such as Batman, Benny, Princess Uni-Kitty, Vitruvius, and Wyldstyle). Regular Builders are unable to normally construct objects out of piles of Lego pieces and instead require instruction pages that are found throughout each level for the construction worker characters to use. Using these, players follow the instructions to build objects with specific pieces like real-life LEGO sets. Master Builders, on the other hand, have the ability to grab Lego pieces from the environment and use them to create something new.

Other abilities include using switches as Lord Business in either his Lord or President Business forms, fixing machinery, hacking into computers, destroying gold bricks with lasers, destroying silver bricks with rockets or dynamite, starting fires, and putting out fires

The Lego Movie is shown to be aimed at both children and adults, i.e. Families. With its light-hearted nature, adventure, excitement and comedy it is a typical family film but the most notable fact that ties it all up from the children to the adults is that it is Lego. A toy children play with that has been around for decades, which the parents of those children most likely played with as well. It’s because of this the movie targets people from such a young age to adulthood; it on some level relates to them all and so constructs a family target audience.

Monday 25th January

Poster campaign

The LEGO Movie poster campaign appealed to all sorts of audiences, old and young. They use a lot of codes and conventions such as the title, a tag-line, the billing, and of course, the main characters. The typeface is unique to the LEGO Movie as it hasn't been used by other movie's and producers. The characters are running from an explosion, with Emmet in the front, looking quite distraught and, put bluntly, scared. All the other characters look quite serious and ready for anything, whereas Emmet looks how most people would look running away from danger, making it seem like he's just like us, just a normal person; he's just like everyone else.

Wildstyle's close-up will appeal to the female audience as she looks strong, cool and independent.

Lord Business' close-up makes him appear quite menacing and frightening, showing he has a hot temper.

Vitruvius' close-up makes him seem incredibly whimsical and wise, like most old wizard-type characters in films.

Monday 1st February

Contrary to what some commenters claim, I don’t relish seeing yet another movie for kids with the same old sexist pattern that’s been done so many times my head spins. I’m so sick of the Minority Feisty, I could scream. I cannot believe Hollywood keeps churning out this rubbish.

The last line of the movie, the finale, is all you really need to know to understand the sexist stereotyping throughout. Batman (a major character, while Wonder Woman gets two lines) urges his girlfriend, Lucy, to go off with, the movie’s protagonist, saying: “No, Lucy. He’s the hero you deserve.” The girl– and she is the girl– is the prize to be won.

Here’s what drives me crazy about this film. “The Lego Movie” is all about prizing creativity above all, yet,  when it comes to gender, innovation flies right out the window and cliché dominates the imaginary world. It’s just like how in “Turbo” the movie’s message is that a snail can win the Indy 500, follow your dreams, be anything you want to be…unless you happen to be a girl. Same with “Planes:” anyone can become a champion, even a crop duster, except for…females. What are children supposed to think about possibility and potential when in narrative after narrative girls are stuck in supporting roles if they get to exist at all?

Explain how an effective marketing campaign would exploit a range of media platforms

Branding

Displaying your business’ personality through social media is one of the best ways to connect with your target audience. Your social media channels are just expanded opportunities for your brand’s voice, content and interactions.

Brands are placing a bigger emphasis on customer experience because of the impact it has on reputation. Brands who engage on social media channels receive higher loyalty from their customers.

Faceless corporations are a thing of the past, and now you can see more results through the humanization of your social media efforts. These days, consumers care not only about what they buy, but also the type of company they’re buying from. Social media has a 100% higher lead close rate than outbound marketing.

the reason that is most likely to lead to ROI: increased inbound traffic. Without social media, your leads are limited to people who are familiar with your brand and people who find you by searching ranked keywords. By increasing your social media content frequency and expanding your social media channel presence, you are adding another path back to your site. And as a result, you’ll receive higher traffic, as well as more conversions.
